At dusk on 25th October take part in our brand new lantern walk, Light the Night, wherever you are.

As the clocks go back on 25 October 2020, help us bring light to the darkness of blood cancer by taking part in your own Light the Night walk: a walk to celebrate, honour and remember those affected by blood cancer.

Sign up for free today to get free fundraising pack and environmentally friendly handheld led lanterns.

Whether you choose to walk around the block on your own, or walk 10 miles with your close family in line with government social distancing guidelines, you’ll be helping Blood Cancer UK beat blood cancer during one of the most challenging times our community has ever faced.

We are very excited to have partnered up with our sister charity in the US, the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Society, to bring Light the Night walks to the UK for the first time. Together, we stand united in our shared mission to beat all types of blood cancer for good. Their Light the Night walks take place right across the US, with over one million walkers a year raising millions of dollars.

Whilst we may be apart, we walk together.

What do I need to do?

  1. Sign up for free, selecting the number of lanterns you’d like. You’ll receive a free digital fundraising pack straight away and we'll post your lanterns out in plenty of time for your walk.
  2. Set up a JustGiving page and encourage people to donate to your page.
  3. As the sun is setting on 25th October, pick up your lantern and walk however far you’d like, to celebrate, honour and remember those affected by blood cancer.
  4. Send in your donations to us once you’ve completed your walk so that we can invest them in beating blood cancer.

Please note that we assume that some level of social distancing guidance will still be in place in the time of the event, and therefore ask that you organise your walk in accordance with government advice on social distancing.

Finally, as a charity, the Covid-19 pandemic means we now expect to be able to spend £1.8 million less on research this year. But with your support, we can turn things around. By fundraising for Light the Night you’ll be helping us to make up that £1.8 million shortfall.

The lanterns we post out include a small LED lantern and are designed to be reusable. They are not Chinese lanterns, do not float into the air and will not be released at any stage. They are designed to be carried on the walk and then kept as a memory of your Light the Night walk.

We will be sending lanterns out during the week beginning 12th October, so you will receive your lanterns in plenty of time for your walk on 25th October.

Of course! Whilst we chose 25 October because that’s the day the clocks go back, meaning more families would be able to take part, Light the Night is your event. As such you’re able to choose to walk whatever distance you like, in any way you like, you can also choose a walk date that works best for you. Please note that we will post lanterns out during the week beginning 12 October.

We have made a conscious decision to make lanterns free to participants because we have undertaken insights which tell us how impactful walking with a light is and how integral they are to the walk. They cost us around £3.50 per unit, plus postage so if you would like to cover the costs, please do add a donation to your JustGiving page. We also want to collect fantastic photos and videos from your walks to promote future events, so we felt this would give us the best chance to make your photos look great.
