Background to the Welsh election

What responsibilities does the Senedd have?

  • Health is fully devolved, meaning the Welsh Government is responsible for how the NHS in Wales is funded and delivered.
  • For people living with blood cancer, this directly affects diagnosis, access to treatments or clinical trials, and the support and services they rely on.

Changes to the Senedd in 2026:

  • This election marks big changes in the Senedd, with 36 additional members being elected to the Senedd under a new voting system, electing 96 members in total.
  • This has the potential to mean more Members championing blood cancer in the Senedd.
  • There are new constituencies too, with 16 constituencies each electing six Members of the Senedd.
  • For the first time, everyone aged 16 and over can vote.
