MP Jess Phillips meets top leukaemia scientists at Birmingham University
The Birmingham Yardley MP met Professor Paul Moss and his team at the Institute of Immunology and Immunotherapy on Friday 20 April, the day before World AML Awareness Day.
Jess Phillips visited Professor Moss to hear about his team’s work on improving the effectiveness of stem cell transplants. Transplants offer the best chance of a cure for some people with blood cancers such as acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).
Jess is an officer for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer, which published its inaugural report in January calling for blood tests for patients displaying one or more potential symptoms of blood cancer. Jess was accompanied by Bloodwise CEO Gemma Peters.
AML is a form of cancer that affects blood cells called myeloid cells, which include red blood cells, platelets and certain types of white blood cells. Every year more than 3,000 people are diagnosed with AML in the UK, and although it can affect anyone of any age, the majority of people are aged over 60. Fewer than one in five AML patients will survive for longer than five years after diagnosis.
