NHS pilots aim to speed up access to new medicines

- Edward Pinches

United Kingdom

The Government has announced a series of new NHS pilots designed to help patients access innovative medicines more quickly, including some treatments for rare conditions.

The pilots will test new ways of speeding up how medicines are priced, approved and adopted across the NHS.

For many people with blood cancer, time matters."

The Government says the changes could help eligible patients receive new treatments months earlier, while building on recent changes to NICE that have already led to additional medicines being approved for NHS use.

Annalize Odamtten, Policy Manager at Blood Cancer UK, said:
"For many people with blood cancer, time matters. Faster access to innovative medicines has the potential to improve both the quality and length of people's lives. We welcome these pilots and the focus on speeding up access to new treatments. The key now will be ensuring these pilots deliver faster, fairer access in practice, so that people with blood cancer can benefit from effective new treatments without unnecessary delay."
