"Someone as amazing as Ellie could never be forgotten"

12th Aug 2024

Nearly two years after Ellie's diagnosis of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), Ellie sadly passed away in 2022 aged just 18. Watch Ellie's sister, Emma, talk about Ellie's legacy and their family's hopes for the future.

Ellie's story

When Ellie first became unwell, she experienced vague blood cancer symptoms such as a lack of energy and infections. In October 2020, she was eventually diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), a type of blood cancer.

Ellie underwent six months of chemotherapy, which successfully put her into remission in March 2021.

During remission, Ellie was able to live the life or a normal teenager, but her cancer sadly returned in July 2021. More chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant followed, but at that point, a year after she was first diagnosed, the doctors informed Ellie and her family that there was nothing more they could do to treat her blood cancer.

During Ellie's illness she fundraised over £20,000 for charities that supported her, including Blood Cancer UK, and to this day Ellie's family continue to fundraise and raise awareness in her memory.

Throughout my sister Ellie's AML diagnosis, all we held on to was the hope that she was going to be ok. The trial sadly didn't work for Ellie but we are so grateful for all of the research that is being carried out"
