The All Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer (APPGBC)

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer (APPGBC) raises awareness and promotes the needs of blood cancer patients with parliamentarians, government, NHS and charity stakeholders.

What are All-Party Parliamentary Groups?

All-Party Parliamentary Groups (APPGs) are informal cross-party groups which are run by and for Members of the Commons and Lords. Many choose to involve individuals and organisations from outside Parliament in their administration and activities.

How are we involved?

Blood Cancer UK run the secretariat for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer on behalf of the Chair, Henry Smith MP (Con, Crawley) and the Vice Chair, Colleen Fletcher (MP, Lab Coventry North East).

What topics are discussed?

The APPG on Blood Cancer was set up in 2017 and continues to meet on a regular basis. We discuss issues which impact on people affected by blood cancer. In recent years we have held meetings on early diagnosis, CAR-T treatment, access to drugs and treatments and rapid diagnostic centres.

Speakers at our meetings have come from NHS England, Cancer Research UK, the Royal College of Pathologists and charity representatives. We are always joined by a wide group including people affected by blood cancer, colleagues from other charities and organisations and Parliamentarians.

APPGBC elected officers

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Blood Cancer (APPGBC) was first established in June 2016. It re-formed in July 2017. The elected officers are:

  • All Party Parliamentary Group Chair: Henry Smith MP.
  • All Party Parliamentary Group Vice-Chairs: Colleen Fletcher MP, Maggie Throup MP.
  • All Party Parliamentary Group Officers: Jim Shannon MP, Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Jess Phillips MP.
